« Fungi: Masters of Interfacial Redox Enzymology »
Abstract:
Filamentous fungi usually encode in their genomes a wide variety of redox enzymes, many of which are secreted at the interface between the fungal cell and its environment. Some, such as the copper radical oxidases (CROs), have been studied for decades while others, like the lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), have been reported much more recently. Strikingly, the biological function of most of these enzymes still remain unclear. In this lecture, after briefly retracing the history of CRO and LPMOs, and key mechanistic discoveries made along the way, I will present our most recent efforts to elucidate their biological functions. I will also present how we intend to transfer this knowledge from biological to non-natural interfaces.
