From the double helix to the hemicycle

21 November/11h30 - 18h00

Philippe Berta (Université de Nimes)

From the double helix to the hemicycle

A geneticist by training, Philippe Berta was successively a research fellow at the CNRS, director of research at INSERM, university professor, and is now professor emeritus. He participated in the discovery of the SRY gene, a determining factor in male sex in mammals.

In 2005, he founded the ADN school in Nîmes, the city where he would go on to become president of the university, which gained autonomy during his tenure. Co-founder of the PACA-Occitanie competitiveness cluster, he has been its vice-president since its creation. Elected deputy from 2017 to 2024, he was co-rapporteur for the multi-year research programming law and the bioethics law. He was also president of the Covid research commission during lockdown. In 2021, he authored a report on scientific, technological, industrial, and health culture for a new medical research and innovation policy, which was submitted to the Elysée Palace and the High Commission for Planning.

Building on these diverse experiences, he is now working to build a societal coalition for the revival and profound reform of innovation in healthcare. During his presentation, Philippe Berta will look back on the different stages of his scientific, educational, economic, and political career and will share his vision for the healthcare sector.
