Microbiota-derived natural products determine protection against pathogens in C. elegans

Microbiota-derived metabolites are known to play an important role in the crosstalk between the gut microbiota and the host immune system. Of these metabolites, bacterial natural products (also called secondary or specialised metabolites) that are encoded by biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) have emerged as crucial components of host-microbiota interactions. Yet, the vast majority of microbiota-encoded BGCs are of unknown function and mechanistic studies linking specific microbial natural products to host phenotypes are scarce. In my talk I will present findings on two C. elegans microbiota BGC-derived molecules and their associated biological activities, and highlight the role of these molecules in microbiota-mediated protection against pathogens and microbe–host homeostasis.
