IMM's Responsible Environmental Transformation and Ecological Resilience unit was created in autumn 2022 by IMM-FR3479's management to implement actions that meet the objectives of sustainable development objectives committed by the Plan Bas Carbone of the CNRS.
To better disseminate information and raise staff awareness of the challenges of the ecological transition, CNRS has set up a network of "sustainable development" contacts within its functional divisions, regional delegations, institutes and laboratories, to support the low-carbon transition of its structures.

An assessment to identify the levers of action for more sober and ambitious research !
As part of the national low-carbon strategy, public institutions such as CNRS are required to produce a greenhouse gas emissions balance sheet. The aim is to measure and quantify CO²eq emissions: to "create" an annual snapshot of GHG emissions arising from the organization's activities, such as staff commuting to and from work, missions carried out by scientists as part of their research activities (going out into the field, taking part in symposia, etc.), and purchases required for research and laboratory life. The aim is to identify emission sources and create reduction scenarios for the laboratory as a whole. The methodology recommended by Ademe and collaboration with the Labos 1point5 research group have provided tools for carrying out greenhouse gas emissions balance sheets in research units. The Labos 1point5 research group is supported by CNRS, INRAE, ADEME, INRIA and Sorbonne University. We have produced the greenhouse gas emissions balance sheet 2022 and 2023 for IMM-FR3479. This is the fruit of teamwork within the federation, involving IMM management, the IMM administrative and accounting department, all staff (food and transport surveys) and the campus STL.
The research federation responded to a CNRS Bas Carbone call for projects in May 2023 to create a common store for the laboratories and scientific and technical platforms of the research federation. Purchasing is one of the areas with the highest GHG emissions. The creation of a common purchasing repository will make it possible to pool orders and limit deliveries. We also plan to research and identify more sustainable consumables (more virtuous production of materials, recovery and recycling of packaging by suppliers, etc.).
Identify the practices and needs of IMM-FR3479 staff: survey of staff mobility patterns, participation in CJA Mobility Commissions (identification of campus spaces and installation of bike shelters, communications on carpooling solutions implemented at campus level).
The establishment of IMM-FR3479 BGES has made it possible to monitor consumption (electricity, gas, water) in the various buildings occupied by FR departments. Laboratory life: freezers lowered to -70 C, IMM laundry staff study the use of water for washing glass pipettes, project to switch to LED lighting in buildings.
Reuse of aging servers and infrastructures as backup and archive servers. We plan to take part in the next World Clean Up Days: workshops offered to FR staff to raise awareness of good practices in digital sobriety.
Sorting, reuse, recycling, revalorization Installation of sorting garbage cans on FR premises (paper/cardboard, laboratory aluminum, packaging sorting). Management of polystyrene collection on campus. Implementation of WEEE procedures.
We trained to run participatory awareness-raising workshops (The climate fresk ! and Ma Terre en 180') to understand the essentials of climate issues and build scenarios to reduce our carbon footprint and take action. In 2024 : 4 Climate Fresk ! for FR staff and LCB, LISM, BIP and IGS laboratories :
- 1 Ma Terre en 180' workshop for DR12 students lab unit director.
- Setting up display areas and other communications on the premises: lift-free challenge, vigilance/water and electricity consumption, air-conditioning, mobility, etc.
- Implementation of digital collaborative work tools: creation and animation of spaces for the FR, labs and campus committee on the state tool Resana.
- Distribution of ADEME awareness-raising booklets on sustainable food, anti-waste, and eco-responsible gestures in the office. Photo reports on sustainable development weeks at the campus restaurant.
Representation of the FR within DAC Carboneutre Participation in the Joseph Aiguier Campus's sustainable development referent network Preparation and participation in the Sustainable Development Referents Days AMU-CNRS DR12-IRD Meetings with the Joseph Aiguier Campus's logistics and security departments to integrate our sustainable development initiatives into campus practices.
Fight against habitat loss : request to install nesting boxes for swifts in the context of insulation work on a building in 2023/2024 in compliance with the law on the protection of endangered species.Observations and participatory science : integration of the campus in the European CIVIS program "Birds of europeans campuses" in the presence of an AMU ornithologist. Animation of an observation group on campus.Protection : application for registration as an LPO Refuge Site (in progress)Maintenance of green spaces : drafting of a proposal for the "Maintenance of campus green spaces" contract in compliance with current regulations and the Stratégie Nationale Biodiversité 2030.
